Lunar Eclipse This Wednesday

Monday, February 18th, 2008

A quick note about an upcoming photography opportunity. This Wednesday, February 20th, is a total lunar eclipse and it will be the last one until December 2010! North and South America as well as Europe and Africa will all be able to see most or all of the eclipse. A perfect opportunity to practice photographing the moon and eclipses and capture an image like the one to the right from Jimmy Westlake.

The eclipse will begin at 5:43pm PST (8:43pm EST), reach mid eclipse at 7:26pm PST (10:26pm EST), and end at 9:09pm PST (12:09pm EST). More details about the eclipse can be found at NASA’s total lunar eclipse page. (also check out the photo gallery from the last eclipse in August of 2007).

SF Pillow Fight Tomorrow

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

For those in San Francisco tomorrow night, and with no prior plans, there will be the 3rd Annual Valentine’s Day Pillow Fight in Justin Herman Plaza. It’s quite a site to experience and a wonderful chance to practice your photography skill while dogging pillows. Actually, the rules are pretty simple and well followed by (most) participants. No pillow in hand, no hitting with a pillow.

The portfolio above are some of the ones that I caught last year during the pillow fight. These photos are being displayed by the FocalPower lightbox portfolio sharing widget. The sharing widgets are part of the FocalPower professional grade photo hosting platform for sharing your photos on websites and blogs. The great thing about the platform is that the photos are already uploaded and all I have to do is copy a bit of widget HTML code into my blog posting to add the photos. Took me longer to write this sentence than to add the photos to this post!  And the platform allows me to share these photos on multiple sites, the same portfolio (with minor formatting changes) is on display on my personal photograph blog as well. Any changes I make to the contents of the portfolio are automatically seen everywhere that portfolio is shared.

Stay tuned for more info about the platform…

Back from Vail

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

If you have been following the progress of FocalPower, then you might have noticed that development slowed down at the end of January. Well, it was because I was taking a break and having a great time on vacation snowboarding in Vail, Colorado. We were lucky and the snow conditions were some of the best I’ve experienced in years. As a result, I didn’t take too many photos but here are a few from the trip. The snowboarder in orange is me.

Now that I’m back and rested, alpha users of the system will start to see some new features released over the next several weeks.

Email Scam Targets Photographers

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

There is an email scam that I was made aware of recently that seems to be targeting photographers (thanks to Daniel Lemin for alerting me to this!). It’s a variation of the “Nigerian money scam” email that you have probably heard of before. Since this scam targets photographers (possible hoping to catch a high number of enthusiast or semi-professional photographers), we should all be on alert.

Below is a copy of one of the email variations:

I did say variation above. There are variations on this theme targeting photojournalists, wedding photographers, etc.

The way this works is basically upon confirmation of “availability” and a pricing by the photographer, “Marcus Garvey” (who, BTW, is a famous Jamaican activist from the early 1900s) will send the photographer a check and ask them to forward a large portion of it to the conference organizers. Of course the check will bounce and the scammers hope the photographer will forward the money before the bad check settles in their checking account and bounces. Another way this could work, is the international phone number’s could be ones that cost you extra to call, well above and beyond the cost of a normal international call.

It’s a scam that all photographs should be aware of. Remember the old axiom: It it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
