FocalPower Looking for Alpha Users

Friday, November 30th, 2007

The holidays are upon us. And FocalPower is has a gift for some adventurous souls. Over the past few months, we have been busy designing and building a professional grade photo sharing and management system. The past few years has seen an explosion of photo sharing solutions. All of these solutions seem to have themselves as the center of attention: it’s about them and their service. Not you and your photos. We feel this is wrong. The center of attention should be you and your photography! Every photographer needs to have a means of sharing his or her photographic work on the web. However, there are too many places that this can (and should) happen: your website, your blog, other’s blogs, forums, etc. Why should you have to deal with all of them individually? More importantly, why should you loose control of your photographic brand when you do share photos on these sites?

Core to FocalPower’s mission, is to enable photographers to share their images in a manner that maximizes their image’s quality while minimizing the photographer’s work. FocalPower’s service will allow a photographer to upload their photos and then share them in multiple locations that the photographer controls. Additionally, the photographer will be able to extend their photographic brand to each place they share their photos.

This is Professional Grade Photo Sharing! It’s about you and your photos.

Our mission also includes making your life easier. We realize that there are multiple sites on the Internet that are of value to you to place your images. Some of these sites require that you upload images directly to them. Why should you spend your precious time uploading images to multiple sites? Why should you have to loose your photographic brand when you do?

You shouldn’t! You should have a photo management system that can do that for you. Upload them once. Organize them once. Brand them once. Then have us push them out to other services for you. This frees you up to do what is important: creating more great photos!

FocalPower’s Initial Release — Alpha Users Wanted

We are a short ways away from releasing our service. However, before we just open up the flood gates we need a few adventurous souls who can help us test and improve the system. We are looking for alpha users to help us refine the initial features as we finish them.

While the alpha version won’t be perfect (what ever is?), it will be usable. And will be evolving quickly. We are looking for a hand full of dedicated users to put the system through its paces and provide us feedback. We can’t stress the feedback part enough! Those who do will receive a free one year subscription to the service once we release it to the public!

If you’re interested, please apply by filling out our online application. We will be contacting all applications shortly with more details.

And stay tuned, we’ll be releasing more details about the FocalPower service on the blog over the weeks.

Share Your Favorite Photo Quotes

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

A number of months ago, the FocalPower Team provided the internet photographic community with a free widget that randomly displays quotes related to photography on your website or blog. The Random Quote Widget has grown in popularity and is now widely used on a growing number of sites. The Quote Archive that powers the widget has also grown to over 450 inspirational and though provoking quotes about photography.

Now you can add your favorite photography related quotes to the Quote Archive!

We have created an Submit A Quote form so you can add your favorite photography related quote to the Quote Archive. If your favorite quote isn’t part of the archive, provide us with as much information that you have about the quote. We will then make sure that the quote is categorized and sourced appropriately. Once this is complete, your quote will be made available to all the Random Quote Widget users!

So, what’s your favorite quote?

We do reserve the right to ensure that quotes are inspiration, thought provoking and related to photography.

Creative Commons, Legal Issues and Tools

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

San Francisco Photographer Jim Goldstein has a wonderful posting out today titled Creative Commons: A Great Concept, I’ll Never Employ. Photographers today need to understand the legal landscape involved with their craft. While Creative Commons is fairly well known in certain circles, many photographers don’t really understand the details of the creative common licenses. Nor do they think about the long term ramifications of their choices. These are just some of the items that are discussed in the article.

It is also surprising how few tools photographers have that help us deal with these legal issues. We have numerous tools that allow us to be more productive working with our photography (i.e., Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom) but why don’t we have tools that help us automate the other critical areas of our craft? The areas that are, in many ways, more critical to our long term success. The areas that we either waste time with today or don’t spend the time with that we should?
